The Village and other Wisconsin communities are working on an outreach program to educate the public on the role stormwater plays in water quality. A series of articles relating to storm sewers and stormwater will be published in the Village newsletter and on this website.
As you look in streets and parking lots in the Village, you will probably find culverts, ditches, and inlets which connect to storm sewers. One of the misconceptions about storm sewers is that they go to a wastewater treatment plant. Storm sewers actually transport stormwater directly to rivers, lakes, streams, or wetlands.
Storm sewers collect stormwater runoff (rain and melting snow) which can contain materials found on streets, such as oil, gas, pet waste, fertilizers, leaves, and grass clippings. When these materials enter lakes, streams, and rivers, they become pollutants that affect the water and aquatic plant and animal life.
Articles that provide tips to keep waterways clean will be published on this website. You can also watch the progress of the Village's rain garden located at the Fire Station (10000 W. Forest Home Avenue).
